Premier League
Known as the hardest domestic football league in the world, the Premier League is England’s top flight of football and is home to some of the world’s greatest teams and players. Manchester City, Arsenal, and Manchester United are all competitors in the English Premier League (EPL) and are well-known by fans of European football due to their repeated success in competitions worldwide. Some current, familiar players in the English Premier League include Harry Kane, Erling Haaland, and Mohammed Salah, to name a few. How does the Premier League operate?
Much like the German Bundesliga, the EPL consists of 20 teams and a point-scoring system based on the result of a game. Each fixture is played twice, once at the team’s home ground and the other at the away ground. Winning a game is equal to 3 points, drawing is worth 1 point each, and losing gives no points at all. It is impossible to lose points unless an offence is committed, but this is usually something more serious than a bad result.
The EPL season takes place between August and May, with a few breaks for international and cup games. Each team plays 38 games, meaning the maximum number of points available for a team is 114 – a feat that no team is yet to complete, although some have come moderately close. The closest anyone has been is Manchester City in the 2017/18 season, finishing with 100 points.
As with the other elite leagues, the top 4 finishers in the EPL gain access to the Champions League group stages. 5th place is given access to the Europa League through a group stage, and 6th gets Europa Conference League qualification access. The bottom 3 teams are relegated from the league and replaced by 1st, 2nd, and the playoff winners from the Championship.
Teams that compete in the Premier League
Out of the 20 teams that play in the Premier League, a large fraction are usually London clubs, with the 2022/23 season seeing 7 of the 20 teams be London-based. Manchester has both City and United, which displays a great rivalry every season. The so-called “Big 6” includes Manchester City, Manchester United, Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur, which are supposed to be the 6 most powerful teams in the league, although, in recent years, Newcastle and Brighton seem to be displaying good quality and pushing for the top spots in the league.
Some of the EPL record holders include Alan Shearer (most goals with 260), Ryan Giggs (most assists with 162), Petr Cech (most clean sheets with 202), and Gareth Barry (most appearances with 652). Manchester United are the team with the most all-time wins, 721, and Everton has the most all-time losses, with 430.
