RB Leipzig is a German professional football club based in the city of Leipzig, sometimes known as Die Roten Bullen or The Red Bulls. The club was founded in 2009 by Red Bull GmbH, the company that also owns several other football clubs around the world, including Red Bull Salzburg and New York Red Bulls. The club was initially called SSV Markranstädt and played in the lower divisions of German football. They play their home games in the Red Bull Arena, with a capacity of just shy of 43,000 spectators. Find out more with our RB Leipzig tame page at Online Casino Slots.
History of RB Leipzig
In 2010, Red Bull purchased the licence of fifth-division side SSV Markranstädt and renamed the club, RB Leipzig. The club then began its rapid ascent through the German football league system.
In 2013, RB Leipzig was promoted to the 3. Liga, the third tier of German football, and in 2014, they were promoted to the 2. Bundesliga. In just their second season in the 2. Bundesliga, RB Leipzig finished runners-up and was promoted to the Bundesliga for the first time in their history. RB Leipzig quickly established itself as one of the top teams in the Bundesliga, finishing second in the 2016-17 season and reaching the quarterfinals of the UEFA Champions League in the 2019-20 season. The club has been controversial due to its ownership structure and the perceived lack of tradition and history. Nevertheless, RB Leipzig has quickly become a major force in German football and has attracted a large following both domestically and internationally.
RB Leipzig Honours
Although RB Leipzig has never won the Bundesliga title, this is mainly due to their relatively new existence. In terms of honours, the American-owned club have won the DFB-Pokal once and the German Supercup once. They have also been involved in the Champions League and other top-flight competitions. The trophy cabinet remains quite bare for RB Leipzig, and with the two German Giants still reigning on top, we expect this to remain the same.
Famous Players/Team Legends of RB Leipzig
As the RB Leipzig team is relatively new, it is no surprise that there are no historical names on the team sheet. There are, however, some big names of modern football that either have played or still play for The Red Bulls. Such names include Timo Werner, who had a somewhat unsuccessful stint with Chelsea, as well as Manchester United’s Marcel Sabitzer and Dayot Upamecano of German rivals Bayern Munich.
One name that may not be as familiar is Yussuf Poulsen. The 28-year-old Dane has not played many games recently, following the return of both Timo Werner and Christopher Nkunku, although he has contributed to 147 goals in 353 games for the club. Before RB Leipzig, he played for Lyngby BK and has spent the rest of his time where he currently is.
